MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG)—October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and News 5 is looking at cases in Mobile County and the resources available for victims.
Those who help domestic violence victims said the numbers don't always tell the whole story.
Numbers from the Mobile County Sheriff's Office show there have been 966 domestic-related calls in the county so far this year. Of those, 377 were to report some kind of violence, but countless other cases go unreported.
"It's nothing to be ashamed of," Executive Director of Penelope House Tonie Ann Torrans said. "It does happen to the people you least likely think it would happen to."
Penelope House is a safety and support program for victims of domestic violence and their children.
