Social Services Minister Tanya Plibersek has refused to give her opinion on whether a transgender paedophile should be allowed in a female prison.

The controversy follows the case of a father who was transitioning from male to female and was convicted of sexually abusing his five-year-old daughter.

Despite the severity of the crimes, the individual was sentenced to a minimum of just 2.5 years in jail— served in a female correctional centre .

Ms Plibersek declined to comment on the “individual case” but argued that “every human being has rights”.

“I think women deserve to be safe everywhere and that includes in jails,” Mr Plibersek told Sky News on Thursday.

“We know that so many women who end up in jail have had experiences of child sexual abuse themselves, sexual assault.
