Current and recently laid-off UCSF researchers rallied Wednesday to protest the university's cutting about half of the team at its Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases.

UCSF laid off 28 workers last week, according to the unions representing them and the university, including faculty, research associates, chemists, biologists and animal health technicians following a significant budget cut to the institute. The 26-year-old center will no longer research Alzheimer’s and prion diseases, focusing solely on Parkinson’s as a result of the financial shortfall.
