The Blue Jays haven’t been able to extract much value from future Hall-of-Famer Max Scherzer this season, but there was a five-outing stretch beginning in late June, when he performed just as originally hoped.
Scherzer allowed three runs or fewer while tossing at least six innings in five consecutive quality starts from July 27 to Aug. 19. He wasn’t the Scherzer of old and yet, at age 41, he was a reasonable enough facsimile.
The success was short-lived and both sides spent two months trying to get it back. The internal expectation is that a recent two-week break bought Scherzer time to get healthy and that the reinvigorated veteran will help the Jays get back into the American League championship series with the Seattle Mariners.
