It has been revealed that Celtic and Rangers have paid more than any other club in Scotland for policing over the last three seasons.

Data from a Freedom of Information Request found that both clubs forked out a combined total of £3.1 million to cover matches at their respective grounds - £1.6 million at Ibrox and £1.5 million at Parkhead.

Across the country, Police Scotland has charged football clubs nearly £9 million in the last four seasons in a bid to recoup money spent on security inside grounds on match days, reports the Record .

The figures emerged after warnings from a police union chief that rising fan violence was spreading into lower divisions and putting an overstretched force at breaking point.
