The Central government on Thursday said the US administration has shown interest in deepening energy cooperation with India, and discussions are currently underway between the two nations.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement that, where the US is concerned, “we have for many years sought to expand our energy procurement”.
“This has steadily progressed in the last decade. The current Administration has shown interest in deepening energy cooperation with India. Discussions are ongoing,” the MEA added.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump said he has been "assured" that India won't be buying oil from Russia, while adding that he understands that it can't be done “immediately”.
The MEA statement said that India is a significant importer of oil and gas.
