CHICAGO — A funeral service honoring the late Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, who was a staple on Loyola University's campus for decades, will be held on Thursday.

Sister Jean, who became an international celebrity during Loyola’s 2018 run to the Final Four in the NCAA Tournament, died last week at age 106.

Sister Jean, born Dolores Bertha Schmidt on Aug. 21, 1919, joined the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1937, taking the name Sister Jean Dolores.

A native of San Francisco, Sister Jean taught at several Catholic schools in Chicago and California before first coming to the Lake Shore Campus in 1961 to teach at Mundelein College, where she held numerous roles over the next 30 years, until the school affiliated with Loyola in 1991.
