The province of Alberta is opening the door to making the first major change on its licence plates since 1984, when it switched from a yellow plate design to the current, iconic red on white.
Starting yesterday and running until November 5, Albertans will be taking part in a tournament-style vote for a new licence plate.
The decided plates will start appearing in late 2026 and will feature a new motto — “Strong and Free” in text on the bottom of the plate, which many online critics have found uninspiring.
The new text on the plate is designed to reflect the provinces “bold identity” and “economic strength”, said the government in a press release.
