Title: Government to Propose Stricter Bail and Sentencing Laws
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that his government will introduce a bill next week aimed at implementing stricter bail and sentencing standards for violent crimes. The proposed legislation seeks to make it more challenging for individuals charged with certain violent and organized crime offenses to secure bail.
The offenses targeted by the new rules include violent auto theft, break and enter, human trafficking, assault, sexual assault, and extortion. Carney emphasized that the bill will allow for consecutive sentences for violent and repeat offenders, meaning that individuals cannot serve multiple sentences simultaneously.
In addition to these measures, the government plans to introduce harsher penalties for organized retail theft. The proposed legislation will also eliminate conditional sentences for those convicted of sexual assault.
To bolster law enforcement efforts, Carney stated that the government intends to hire 1,000 new personnel for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance public safety and address rising concerns about violent crime in the country.
The announcement comes as part of the government's ongoing commitment to tackle crime and ensure justice for victims. The bill is expected to be a significant step in reforming the current legal framework surrounding violent offenses.
