The Department of Mobility and Infrastructure will proceed immediately with its plan to replace a lane of Penn Avenue with a bike lane — with a few key modifications — after reaching an agreement in court with the Strip District Business Owners Association.
The revamped Penn Avenue will indeed have a 5-foot wide bike lane between 22nd and 31st streets, but instead of being separated from the road by a physical barrier and a lane of parking as outlined in the city’s original plan, it will have two 3-foot wide painted buffers and be located next to the remaining lane of traffic.
The new agreement addresses the business owners’ concerns that the road would violate the 2018 International Fire Code that the city adopted in 2020, which requires fire vehicle access roads to be at least 20-feet
