It's been a while since Fayetteville woke up to temperatures in the mid-40s — last April, in fact.

A brief, sharp cold front will give the Cape Fear region its first truly crisp morning in months Friday before mellowing into a delightful weekend. Fayetteville may see a slight chance of showers late Sunday, but rain appears to be a non-factor after that.

Instead, the region will continue to creep into fall, with temperatures sliding up toward 80 degrees one day, then down into the 40s the next. Dew points will remain low, adding to the feeling of fall.

Canadian high pressure continues to flex its strength along the Eastern Seaboard, pushing into the Carolinas. The combination of cool air and clear skies will lead to the return of our old pal, radiational cooling.
