WASHINGTON, D.C. (WSIL) -- Former Republican Leader Mitch McConnell experienced a fall on the steps of the Capitol Building and received assistance from fellow senators.

Sen. Steve Daines confirmed that he assisted the 82-year-old in getting back onto his feet.

"I was right behind him and I helped him get back up and he walked on his own power to lunch," Daines said.

McConnell attended the full GOP lunch, which lasted nearly an hour and a half. Senators described him as an "engaged" participant.

After the lunch, McConnell was escorted out by staffers, one of whom he appeared to be clutching for support.

A few minutes later, McConnell was seen exiting the office in a wheelchair.
