VIRGINIA, Minn. (Northern News Now) - An Iron Range man charged in connection with a cold case murder learned his fate on Thursday for a second time.
According to the St. Louis County Attorney’s Office, 57-year-old Michael Carbo, Jr. of Chisholm was sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty by a second jury for the 1986 rape and murder of Nancy Daugherty in her Chisholm home.
Carbo was indicted by the Grand Jury on April 13, 2022, after genetic genealogy pointed law enforcement to Carbo through his DNA left inside the crime scene.
On Aug. 16, 2022, Carbo was convicted following a jury trial, subsequently appealing the conviction.
On May 8, 2024, the Minnesota Supreme Court reversed Carbo’s conviction, finding that Carbo should have been allowed to present limited alternative
