Hundreds of residents from Western Alaska villages are now being sheltered in Anchorage after severe flooding left many homes damaged or unlivable. Dozens of families have been relocated to the Alaska Airlines Center, where the American Red Cross of Alaska is providing food, emergency supplies, health care, and emotional support.
The flooding, caused by the remnants of Typhoon Halong, prompted the Alaska National Guard to evacuate almost 300 people on large C-17 aircraft from Bethel to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. So far, approximately 1,500 residents have been evacuated.
The disaster has drawn attention from Alaska leaders, including Senator Lisa Murkowski, who spoke on the House floor:
“But the reality is, for so many of these people, they will not have homes to go back to.”
