PORTLAND, Ore. (KPTV) - People living at a southwest Portland apartment building were forced to evacuate after investigators say a candle caused a fire early Friday morning.

Just after midnight on Friday, Portland Fire & Rescue crews responded to a fire at the Ruth Haefner Apartments on Southwest Beaverton Hillsdale Highway. PF&R says flames from an unattended candle got out of control in an “extremely cluttered” unit on the fourth floor.

A second alarm was called to bring in additional resources to help with evacuations and in case the fire spread to other units.

Crews were able to put the fire out before it was able spread to other units. No one was hurt.

Investigators say the fire alarms in the unit never went off and they probably weren’t operational.
