The number of violent crimes reported in Minnesota mostly held steady in 2024 compared to 2023, but hate crimes continued to climb.

There was a slight increase – about 1% – in violent crime throughout the Twin Cities metro and a decrease of 3% across the rest of the state, according to the 2024 Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) Uniform Crime Report.

Fewer murders have been committed annually in Minnesota since 2021, when they spiked to 201 statewide.

There were 170 murders in 2024, compared to 181 in 2023. Guns were involved in almost 75% of the incidents, up from nearly 70% percent the previous year.

Aggravated assault also dipped, with a 1.6% decline from 2023 to 2024, but cases of rape and robbery went up.
