TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) - The Tucson Police Department is advising residents on how to spot phone scammers as people fall victim to them every year.

TPD reminds residents that legitimate law enforcement agencies will never call someone to demand payment over the phone.

Signs of phone scammers include cloning government authorities or law enforcement numbers, and texts or calls from someone claiming they are part of those agencies. Phone scammers will also demand payments over the phone while making threats of arrest or warrants out for your arrest, TPD said.

Community members should never relay personal information or payment methods through the phone, and should hang up right away if they receive a call. TPD also urges residents to report the phone scammer to the Federal Trade Commissio
