KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) —Construction is underway on a brand-new plaza at the corner of Gay Street and Hill Avenue. It's part of ongoing efforts to prepare for the long-anticipated reopening of the Gay Street Bridge this December. 6 News hit the streets to hear from a local business and community members about how the project is impacting them, and what they hope the bridge's reopening will bring.
Right now, crews are working to create a new plaza at the north end of the Gay Street Bridge. It will narrow the bridge entrance to 16 feet and remove turn lanes, replacing them with landscaping.
"If the bridge can't reopen for vehicle traffic, and it's going to be for pedestrians and bicyclists, thinking about them in the streetscape and the design is definitely, definitely a plus,” explained
