Palma, a holiday destination favoured by Brits, has announced stringent new measures to tackle overtourism. The capital of Majorca has imposed a complete ban on party boats, new tourist rentals and youth hostels.
The city's mayor, Jaime Martinez, detailed the strict new rules, stating that the prohibition on additional tourist rentals takes effect immediately. Previously, the ban was only applicable to multi-family homes, but it now extends to single-family homes and room rentals, which were previously advertised on platforms like Airbnb.
The mayor noted that there are only 639 legal tourist rentals in Palma, which will continue to operate - however, if they are cancelled, they will not be replaced. The establishment of any new hostels throughout Palma is also prohibited, as announced. E
