The new Merritt library branch at Pen Centre attracted more than 7,000 visitors in its first month and has had so many students gathering to study, Ken Su would like to see hours extended during exam periods.

“I think this is clearly shows how the library’s space evolved to meet the community needs,” the St. Catharines Public Library CEO told city council during a budget meeting this week.

The branch’s move into the spacious new location was one of the highlights of the year for the St. Catharines Public Library, but it has meant shortfalls in its 2025 and 2026 budgets.

The library moved the branch from its home of almost 40 years in a Hartzel Road strip mall because of a proposed rent increase and new terms and conditions on its lease deemed unfeasible.
