State tournament paths were released on Saturday for five Northland soccer teams and one Wisconsin football team and few of them are likely to be satisfied with the outcome.

Esko, in Class A girls soccer, was the only one of five to be seeded higher than fifth in their MSHSL state tournament bracket.

Unlike many MSHSL state tournaments, boys and girls soccer still operate on the “old” system in which the top five teams are seeded and the remaining three are drawn randomly, and three Northland squads went unseeded.

The team most surprised to be unseeded is probably the Duluth East girls. The Greyhounds will play No. 2 seed Stillwater Area in a state quarterfinal on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Forest Lake.
