COLUMBIA — When Josh Bregy met with his faculty advisors at Clemson University Sept. 12, they told the assistant professor that the developing controversy over a Facebook post he shared about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk would blow over, according to an affidavit he filed in federal court .
His advisors couldn’t have been more wrong.
By the end of the day, Bregy was one of several employees across the state who was fired following intense pressure from Republican politicians on universities to cut staff whose social media comments were seen as sympathetic or supportive of Kirk’s assassination .
The political blowback doesn’t appear to be stopping there, as some on the right argue that the social media posts are just the latest evidence of out-of-control
