A British mum tragically died after falling severely ill at a five-star hotel in Cape Verde, which her family described as "unhygienic".

Elena Walsh, 64, was holidaying at the Riu Cabo Verde resort in Sal to celebrate her husband's milestone birthday and their son's engagement. However, a week into the £5,000 holiday, the part-time nurse began experiencing symptoms such as sickness, diarrhoea, and heavy sweats.

Tragically, Elena passed away just two days later. Her devastated husband Patrick expressed serious concerns about the hygiene standards at the hotel during their 12-night stay in August.

He alleges that food was often served lukewarm and undercooked, and he criticised the chaotic care his wife received in the lead up to her untimely death.
