DES MOINES, Iowa —

Des Moines Public Schools says a record-breaking number of people came out Saturday and participated in an annual fundraiser the district puts on.

The district hosted its One Run Fundraiser at Water Works Park and says a record-breaking 2,500 people took part in it. According to the district, corporate and individual sponsors cover all fees for the event. The money gets distributed to schools within the district.

DMPS tells KCCI it raised $51,000.

Prior to the run, interim superintendent Matt Smith spoke to the crowd about the Reimagining Education initiative.

"We have a huge opportunity coming up November 4th. We have a bond referendum that is out," said Smith. "That bond creates educational spaces for 30,000 children in Des Moines Public Schools of today and for
