Nationals MP Barnaby Joyce has revealed details of the personal breakdown in his relationship with Nationals leader David Littleproud.

Mr Joyce said his relationship with Mr Littleproud had broken down over the years, like a bad marriage, and he has all but ruled out mending the split.

Sky News revealed over the weekend that Mr Joyce would not compete for the seat of New England, ending his decades-long relationship with the National Party.

He told Sky News on Monday it was “unfortunate” to leave the party he once ran but he had to “pull the bandaid off”.

“I won't be sort of involved with the National Party at a political level in Canberra. And that's very sad. I love my members of the Nationals at a local level,” he said.
