Doug Martin , the running back who was dubbed the “Muscle Hamster” by his college teammates and played seven seasons in the NFL , has died. He was 36.
Martin’s family confirmed his death Sunday with Tampa Bay Times reporter Rick Stroud .
“It is with great sadness to inform you all that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning,” the family said in the statement. “Cause of death is currently unconfirmed. Please respect our privacy at this time.”
Martin first earned his nickname when he played at Boise State from 2007 to 2011. He received the moniker because of his strength and ability to be a power back, despite standing only 5 feet 9 inches tall.
