WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — A Warwick man is in critical condition after officers rescued him from a car submerged in Apponaug Cove on Saturday night.
Police responded to Arnolds Neck Drive around 7:15 p.m. to find a vehicle about 100 feet from shore, with only the roof visible. Witnesses said they saw someone in the driver's seat before the car sank.
Officers Matthew Maloney, Nicholas Manocchio and Maxwell Neiley immediately jumped into the water to rescue the person, according to police.
Police said the water was dark and officers could not see into the car, but after blindly searching inside, they found the 71-year-old driver.
Officers removed him from the vehicle and swam him back to shore. Firefighters then began life-saving measures, including CPR.
