EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Wendy Curtis is a trailblazer.

The longtime WPRI 12 employee was one of Rhode Island's first female news photographers.

But a devastating diagnosis at 34 years old forced Curtis to become "an indoor cat."

Curtis, who survived Stage 4 breast cancer, spent the rest of her career as an editor for 12 News This Morning, matching the words of a story to the footage viewers see on TV. She officially retired back in June after four decades on the job.

In this week's Street Stories Unpaved, hosts Johnny Villella and Mike Montecalvo caught up with Curtis to see how retirement has been. She also shared her journey as a breast cancer survivor in honor of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
