New details have emerged from the National Transportation Safety Board about the Sept. 18 plane crash in North Carolina that killed acclaimed country songwriter Brett James, his wife and her daughter.

A preliminary report from the NTSB indicates the plane, which James was piloting, “appeared to spiral” as it approached Macon County Airport in Franklin, according to WFFA .

On the afternoon of the crash, at about 2:48 p.m., the 52-year-old songwriter communicated to air traffic control that he was flying at 6,800 feet and would make a 360-degree turn before landing, Parade noted.

Investigators added that tracking data showed the plane making a left turn described as a “tightening spiral.”
