KEY LARGO, Fla. — The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is searching for who is responsible for shooting a spear into the back of a crocodile's head in the Florida Keys.
Officials say they were notified around 11:45 a.m. Saturday at Key Largo in Monroe County, where an eight-foot American crocodile was seen with a spear in its head.
FWC officers and other wildlife professionals from Zoo Miami tried to capture the crocodile to provide treatment, but were unsuccessful.
Authorities are reminding the public that American crocodiles are listed as a federally threatened species by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and it is illegal to kill or harass them under state and federal law.
FWC is continuing to monitor the situation and is looking for more information about this in
