The Geelong Cup has been postponed as strong wind gusts persist, with organisers scrambling to reschedule the key Melbourne Cup lead-in race.

Stewards announced an indefinite delay at Geelong Racecourse around 2pm AEDT, after the third race on the program was run with wind gusts of over 60 kilometres per hour.

The decision to postpone races four to nine, including the Geelong Cup, was made just after 3pm.

"Talking with the emergency services that are actually based on course, and the weather station in the centre … they're saying the current wind conditions are around 46-50kph with gusts of up to 76kph coming through," Racing Victoria steward Corey Waller told Racing.com.

Waller said the wind could die down after 5pm, but there was no certainty of that happening.
