Georgia utility regulators release $5 million to help low-income customers during winter

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - During the winter, temperatures drop while gas prices go up. That’s why the Georgia Public Service Commission is taking action to help mitigate costs for some customers.

On Tuesday, the commission voted to release $5 million from the Universal Service Fund, which helps ensure everyone in the state has gas access.

Half the money will go toward the more than 12,800 people enrolled in Atlanta Gas Light’s Senior Citizen Discount Program . Meanwhile, $2 million is going to HopeWorks , a nonprofit that helps repair seniors’ gas furnaces and water heaters, while the remaining $500 million will be sent to the Salvation Army Utility Assistance Program.
