RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Wake County has approved 12 new full-time EMS positions, the county announced Monday, in response to increased demands.

The new open positions are seven paramedics and five EMTs.

Wake County's population is growing by about 66 people daily, according to a news release. Surveys indicate the population is aging, with 52% of the county's growth from 2020 to 2023 comprising individuals aged 55 and older.

"Wake County EMS has always taken a proactive approach to meeting the needs of our community," said EMS Director Dr. Jon Studnek. "A larger population will result in a larger number of 9-1-1 calls, so it's critical that we scale our staffing early to stay ahead of those needs."

Applications are now open for the next Wake County EMS Academy in March.
