DETROIT — A man with life-threatening leukemia who had been detained at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Lake County since August has been freed.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Michigan announced on Tuesday that after being detained for more than two months, Jose Contreras-Cervantes was released and reunited with his family.
He had been in custody since August due to a pending deportation case.
Contreras-Cervantes, a 33-year-old married father of three who has been living in the U.S. for about 20 years, but not legally, was arrested at an Aug. 5 traffic stop in Macomb County, near Detroit. He had no criminal record beyond minor traffic offenses, said ACLU lawyer Miriam Aukerman.
