A 23-year-old Hamilton man faces impaired charges after hitting a parked vehicle that then smashed into a utility pole in Guelph, police said.

Guelph police said on Tuesday, just after 9 p.m., officers were called to the area of Bristol Street and Yorkshire Street South after a driver hit a parked Tesla and drove it against a utility pole, causing extensive damage to both vehicles.

Officers said they saw several empty and unopened beer cans and detected an odour of alcohol on the driver’s breath. The driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Breath samples showed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system, police said.
