LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The weeks-long government shutdown is impacting federal funding for early childhood education programs, including one helmed by UAMS.

UAMS officials stated that they are temporarily closing their six Head Start/Early Head Start locations in Pulaski County on Nov. 1, adding that 130 employees have been temporarily furloughed.

Officials said this stems from Congress having not yet passed a funding appropriation for the Head Start Program due to the government shutdown. Due to this, UAMS officials said the Head Start Program has not gotten funding or approval to operate beyond Oct. 31.

“We will continue to monitor the situation to keep our families and employees informed,” a UAMS spokesperson said. “We hope to be able to reopen our HeadStart locations soon.”
