TOLEDO, Ohio — The Westwood Rams youth football team is rallying to raise money to repair their longtime home field at Westwood Park, which the city recently deemed unsafe.
“This has been here before I was a child,” said Rams coach Paul Thompson. “I played here when I was a child.”
The team has practiced at the park in west Toledo for years, but players and parents say the field has become hazardous due to tree roots and uneven ground.
“We’ve realized the divots and the branches from the trees have been unsafe for a while,” said Kalie Salas, a Rams parent.
After a city inspection confirmed the field’s condition, families were surprised to learn they may have to cover the cost of repairs themselves.
“We didn’t expect them to say that we would have to pay for it ourselves,” Salas said.
