ATLANTA — The Atlanta Police Department identified the officer seriously injured when his vehicle crashed into a home and caught fire Monday night.
In an update Tuesday, APD said Officer Malik Safi was still in the hospital. The crash scene unfolded near the intersection of North Avenue and James P. Brawley Drive NW around 8:15 p.m. on Monday.
APD Deputy Chief Charles Hampton said Safi was actually headed to assist another police officer in the 500 block of Sunset Avenue with a call for help when the crash happened.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, the officer lost control of the patrol vehicle and crashed into a house; the vehicle caught fire, causing the flames to ignite on the house. GSP officials said the residents of the house were unharmed.
