PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — The Bon Secours Imaging Center in Portsmouth is meeting a well-overdue need in the city with every mammogram it provides, with an event there Wednesday a focal point of breast cancer awareness.

Portsmouth is a city that Bon Secours officials say has one of the highest mortality rates from breast cancer in the Commonwealth.

"God gave me a second chance and he kept me here for a reason," one guest speaker said.

Healing, hope and victory are the cornerstones of Bon Secours. For team members like Michelle Ames, the message from other survivors resonates. She's a 14-year breast cancer survivor herself.

"To make them aware of just how important our breasts are, breast help, and as a survivor I wish that was available to me," Ames said.
