PORTLAND, Oregon — Nearly 300 new overnight shelter beds are expected to open in Southeast Portland this fall, Mayor Keith Wilson announced Wednesday. For the first time, the city said, the beds will be designated for people who are sober and working to remain that way.

“We want to meet everyone where they’re at in that moment,” Wilson said. “How do you get somebody to have addiction recovery stick if you’re releasing them back to where fentanyl and meth are readily available?”

One shelter, Southeast Grand Recovery, will open in December in the former U.S. Bank building at Southeast Grand Avenue and Washington Street. It will include up to 200 recovery beds and, unlike the city’s other low-barrier shelters, will serve people seeking a sober space to sleep.
