HILO, Hawaii (Island News) – Hawaii Island Police are investigating a fatal structure fire that occurred on Puueo St. in Hilo early Wednesday morning.
According to police, the incident occurred at approximately 2 a.m. when South Hilo patrol officers and fire crews responded to a structure fire at a lodging establishment.
Police confirmed that the fire was at the Wild Ginger Hotel in Hilo.
When first responders arrived at the scene they saw the structure fully in flames with portions of the building already collapsed.
Witnesses at the scene reported seeing flames coming from the roof. The 34-year-old manager reported that eight rooms were occupied at the time of the fire and all but two residents were accounted for.
