WASHINGTON — Aid to Maryland's Allegany and Garrett Counties has been denied, again, by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, rejecting an appeal by Gov. Wes Moore months after floods devastated the state's western panhandle.

Towns like Westernport, Md., whose volunteer fire department evacuated 200 people from an elementary school during the May flooding, have been forced to move forward with recovery efforts without expected federal relief funds.

"This decision from FEMA is a profound disappointment for the resilient people of Westernport, who have faced challenges in the wake of the May floods," the town's Mayor Judy Hamilton said on Thursday. "While this news is a setback, our community's spirit remains unbroken."
