WATERBURY, Vt. (ABC22/FOX44) - 911 operators now have another way to help callers experiencing a mental health crisis.

According to Vermont officials, 911 operators can now connect callers directly to 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Operators will stay on the line until a counselor joins the call.

Formerly, all 911 calls of the sort were handled by emergency medical services or police. Vermont officials say that the protocol was first tested in southern Vermont and is now in effect state-wide.

"We want 988 to be as well-known and trusted as 911 for anyone in need of mental health support," said Department of Mental Health Commissioner Emily Hawes, "When emergency and mental health responders work together, Vermonters in crisis can reach the right help without unnecessary hurdles."
