Gonorrhea infections have reached their highest level in a quarter century, according to Montreal’s public health department, which is urging residents to get tested and take precautions.
The city recorded 5,458 cases in 2024 — an incidence rate of 257 per 100,000 people, the Direction régionale de santé publique de Montréal said in a report dated Tuesday, adding the rise has been steady over the past two decades but has accelerated since the pandemic.
While men still account for the vast majority of cases, about five in six overall, the report said the infection rate among women has risen much faster in recent years, up 112 per cent since 2020.
