Montrealers now have a new option for home internet service.

Cable provider Cogeco announced Thursday it is rolling out service to Montreal, Laval and most of Quebec. Plans start at $50/month.

Cogeco’s cable footprint includes areas like Trois-Rivières, Victoriaville, Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Cornwall, Ont., and areas of central and southwestern Ontario, but not the largest cities of Montreal, Quebec City, Laval and Longueuil, whose main cable provider is Videotron.

Rather than build a whole new cable network in Montreal, Cogeco is relying on a wholesale access regime imposed on large telecom companies by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission.
