MAILI, Hawaii (Island News) — A Waianae resident says she only found out she needed to evacuate during Oahu’s latest weather disaster by scrolling on social media — not from an official emergency alert.
Natasha Green was shocked she didn’t receive any kind of phone notification about the Maʻili fire that erupted Wednesday.
“I’m like, why are we not getting any emergency notifications?” she said.
Green said she remembers a time when phones buzzed automatically with warnings, pointing to the infamous 2018 missile alert as an example of a system that actually worked.
“In the past, we had that missile alert notification on our phone,” she said. “I just thought that would be appropriate thing to do.”
Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi revealed Thursday that a 94-year-old woman died as a result
