COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - County officials confirmed a recent rezoning request is part of a bigger plan to expand the landfill.
County staff answered questions from concerned residents who are strongly against the rezoning during a meeting on Thursday night.
The request would rezone about 80 acres of land north of the landfill — just off Monticello Road in northwest Richland County — from agricultural to industrial use. If approved, it would allow more intensive industrial development.
County officials said the land would be used to store fill dirt needed for landfill maintenance — part of a long-term effort to extend the site’s lifespan. Richland County already owns neighboring land that has been zoned for industrial use for years.
Officials said the landfill takes in an average of 50,00
