PORTLAND, Ore. — Shondel Larkin, 52, was convicted and sentenced Thursday for fatally stabbing another rider on a Portland MAX train.

Mike Brady, 51, was attacked in March 2024 while returning home from work. A judge ruled that Larkin was responsible for the stabbing but was suffering from psychotic delusions at the time.

Court documents indicate Larkin told authorities he heard voices that made him believe Brady was a threat.

“The psychological evaluations commissioned by both the state and defense were strikingly similar, and both agreed there was no question that Mr. Larkin met the criteria for guilty except for insanity,” said Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney Sean Hughey.

Outside the courthouse, Brady’s stepson, Marco Solano, spoke about the impact of the attack.
