The Alberta government is planning on introducing legislation to end “long-ballot” protests.

Government House Leader Joseph Schow said that the bill aims to only allow candidates who “truly care and are serious about representing a community” to appear on the ballot.

This follows a recent federal byelection for the Battle River-Crowfoot riding that saw 214 candidates on the ballot, most of them with ties to the Longest Ballot Committee, a movement that calls for electoral reform. This was an election called to get Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre reinstated into the House of Commons.
