WACO, Texas — A McLennan County grand jury indicted a former Waco police officer after investigators say he failed to properly log and store a firearm recovered during a call earlier this year.

According to the Waco Police Department , Rene Martinez, 24, was indicted on one count of tampering with physical evidence following a criminal and internal investigation into his actions while employed with the department.

Investigators said the case began in April 2025 at Waco Regional Airport, where Martinez reportedly recovered a weapon but did not log, document, or place the gun into the department’s property room as required by policy.
